At the Institute of Rural Management (IRM), we hold a simple yet powerful belief: every child, regardless of background or circumstance, has the right to quality education and the opportunity to shape a dignified future. Yet today, over 25 million childr en in Pakistan remain out of school—a reality that demands urgent, innovative, and sustainable solutions.
The SMART Schools Programme was created as a direct response to this challenge. By providing low-cost, community-based primary education, SMART Schools bring learning to the doorsteps of children who would otherwise be left behind. At the same time, the model empowers local women as teachers, giving them not only livelihoods but also the chance to serve as leaders and change-makers within their communities.

What sets this initiative apart is its simplicity, sustainability, and deep community ownership. With 117 SMART Schools established across four provinces and more than 4,200 children enrolled—53% of them girls—we are already witnessing the life-changing impact of education. Each school is more than a classroom; it is a safe space that nurtures knowledge, confidence, and hope.
Our vision extends beyond academics. Through continuous teacher training, regular health check-ups, and a strong emphasis on values and inclusivity, we are striving to develop well-rounded individuals. With robust digital monitoring systems, we ensure that every investment in this program is transparent, accountable, and directly benefits the children we serve.
The journey is far from over, but the path is clear. Together—with the support of communities, partners, and philanthropists—we can scale this model to reach thousands more children. Education is not just a right; it is the most powerful form of social protection. At IRM Smart Schools, we believe education is not merely about acquiring knowledge but about cultivating the ability to live with dignity, hope, empathy, and purpose. While knowledge enlightens, education transforms lives.
About IRM Smart Schools
IRM International CIC supports 111 Smart Schools, reaching 4,125 students across underserved communities in KP, Punjab, Sindh, and Islamabad.
Our goal is to bring out-of-school children (OOSC) into the formal education system by providing quality primary education (Grades 1–5) in multi-grade classrooms, preparing them for board exams and smooth integration into mainstream schools.
Key Features
- Strategic Locations: Schools are established in remote areas lacking access to government schools (beyond a 3 km radius).
- Multi-Grade Classrooms: Each teacher educates ~30 out-of-school children using a tailored, multi-grade approach.
- Standard Curriculum: Students follow the national syllabus and prepare for the official Grade 5 board exam.
- Inclusive Enrollment: Equal opportunity for both boys and girls, including children with physical disabilities.
- Character Building: Teachers focus on nurturing ethical behavior, social skills, and moral values.
- Support Provided: IRM offers teacher training, student uniforms, stationery, and per diem allowances.
- Education for All: We are committed to solving the OOSC crisis in Pakistan—ensuring every child has the right to learn, grow, and thrive.
Health & Well-being: Student Medical Check-ups
To address economic hardship and a lack of awareness about preventive health, IRM initiated Health Diagnostic Campaigns.
These campaigns offer free medical check-ups for students, conducted by volunteer medical professionals directly in school premises. The goal is to ensure early detection, preventive care, and support for children who may otherwise go unnoticed due to systemic barriers.
Innovative Learning with Technology
IRM embraces modern tools to make education engaging and meaningful.
Tablet-based learning is now integrated into our classrooms to support:
- Phonics and Alphabet Learning
- Moral Storytelling
- Interactive Learning Games
These tools not only build literacy but also strengthen values and personality in young learners.
Parent Engagement & Community Involvement
Strong communities make strong schools. IRM has established Parent Education Committees (PECs) to create a 360° development model by involving families in their children’s education.
Regular PEC meetings gather feedback on student progress, behavior, and community needs. Parents’ voices shape improvements and ensure that Smart Schools respond to real community concerns.
